For the Memorial Day Classic on Sunday at Duck River Raceway Park (Wheel, Tenn.), Payton followed up the second-fastest time in time trials with a second-place finish in the feature, trailing Josh Putnam.
Payton finished second in the final Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals point standings, a mere 34 markers behind Carson Ferguson.
On Monday, Freeman stopped at 411 Motor Speedway (Seymour, Tenn.) for the Valvoline Iron-Man Southern Series-sanctioned Scott Sexton Memorial. Earning the 13th-starting position for the $10,052-to-win A-Main via third-place finish in his heat, Payton dropped two spots in the 52-lap affair to finish 15th.
